Tales Of Arise Beginner Guide: 10 tips to know when starting the game

If you were wondering how to play Tales Of Arise, what you should do first when starting the game or what you should know even before, this beginner’s guide is for you!

It will help you out and show you how to get started with Tales Of Arise!

Regardless if you played former games of the Tales of Series, this guide contains essential combat system tips and tricks you would wish to know before starting to play, to get the most out of the game!

Intro

At first, focus on using normal attacks that can quickly stagger enemies, giving you an opening to unleash heavier attacks. Using ground attacks on ground-based enemies and aerial attacks on flying enemies will also go far in achieving victory.

It's always a good idea to evade enemy attacks whenever possible, creating distance between you and your attacker. Even if an attack has a wide range, a well-timed perfect evasion can ensure that you'll emerge from it unscathed.

Let's take a look together at how to do it all!

1. Basic combat controls

As Tales Of Arise is a JRPG, you’ll have to go through lots of fights to survive and pursue your quests and missions. So the first thing you will need to learn is how to fight properly with combat system basics. When fighting enemies you’ll be able to able to use normal attacks, evasion and artes.

2. Normal attack

At first, focus on using normal attacks that can quickly stagger enemies, giving you an opening to unleash heavier attacks.

You can string up to three normal attacks together. But by learning certain skills, this limit can be increased.

There are two types of normal attacks: ground attacks and aerial attacks.

Press [R1] to perform a normal attack.

3. Ground and aerial attacks

Using ground attacks on ground-based enemies and air attacks on flying enemies will also go far in achieving victory. Aerial attacks can be performed in mid-air after jumping.

4. Artes (and Artes gauge)

Artes are special actions performed by spending part of your AG (Artes Gauge).

There are martial artes and arcane artes, all triggered instantly. Arcane artes are more powerful and more AG-intensive than martial artes.

While AG will gradually restore automatically, it will restore more slowly when attacking.

Press [Triangle], [Square], or [Cross] to use the arte assigned to each button.

You can custom your artes panel from the Artes Menu.

5. Evading

In Tales of Arise you cannot guard, you can only evade. And it’s always a good idea to evade enemy attacks whenever possible, creating distance between you and your attacker. Even if an attack has a wide range, a well-timed perfect evasion can ensure that you’ll emerge from it unscathed, allowing you to avoid taking any damage.

Push [L Stick] and press [L1] to evade an enemy attack.

6. Recovery

When a character gets hit by an attack, their HP decreases and if it reaches 0, they’re Knocked Out. During fight, you can restore HP with healing artes such as First Aid or even items, like Apple Gel. Similarly, Resurrection and Life Bottles can be used to revive KO’d members.

7. Changing target

As you will often face several enemies in a single fight, you will have to prioritize or focus on specific targets.

Push [L Stick] as you hold [L1] to change your current target. You can also switch quickly to the nearest target by simply pressing [L1].

8. Boost attacks

You can summon allies in combat to use their unique Boost Attacks. Once the Boost Gauge (BG) is full, press the corresponding pad direction to execute. These moves can be followed up with more attacks afterward and also restore AG when used.

The Boost Gauge builds up automatically over time, it can be filled up faster by landing attacks and Counter Edges on enemies, as well.

9. Boost strikes

Boost Strikes are one-hit kill attacks performed in tandem with other allies.

The lower an enemy's HP is, the less hits in a combo it takes to initiate a Boost Strike. In addition to the target, Boost Strikes can also deal damage to nearby enemies surrounding the target, as well.

When you see the word "STRIKE" appear on screen, press the pad to trigger a Boost Strike and put them out of their misery.

10. Combat Difficulty

If battles feel too hard for you, consider lowering the difficulty level. When retrying a fight, you can change the difficulty via the System screen in the Main Menu, letting you make another attempt with the odds more in your favor.

That's all for now! With these tips you should now be able to start the game in the best conditions, enjoying the basics of the combat system.
